Frequently Asked Questions
What is FIRE?
FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) is a movement focused on extreme savings and investment to retire much earlier than traditional retirement age. The goal is to accumulate 25-30x your annual expenses.
What is a FIRE number?
Your FIRE number is the amount of savings/investments needed to cover your expenses indefinitely. Using the 4% rule, it's typically 25 times your annual expenses. If you spend $40,000/year, your FIRE number is $1 million.
What savings rate do I need for FIRE?
The higher your savings rate, the sooner you reach FIRE. At 50% savings rate, you can retire in about 17 years. At 70%, it drops to about 8.5 years. Most FIRE practitioners aim for 50-70%.
